A building or structure is waterproofed with the use of membranes and coatings to protect the contents underneath, within as well as protecting structural integrity. Waterproofing is used in reference of building structures' basements decks, and wet areas. It is necessary since concrete cannot be watertight on its own. That is how bituminous waterproofing was introduced, it was designed to protect commercial and residential buildings.

Bituminous is made of organic liquids that are highly sticky and viscous and are waterproof. It is mixed with filler components such as limestone or san with polymerssuch as tactic polypropylene – a plastic additive that gives rigidity and tear – resistance or styrene butadiene (SBS), a rubber additive that gives more elastic benefits. That helps when the structure is moving during land settlements or earthquakes.
